Bakhtiari rugs are made by the Bakhtiari tribe who reside in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province, Iran, and have been exported from the country since the early 19th Century when many of the nomads settled in those communities southwest of Isfahan, one of the largest rug-producing regions. They are woven on a cotton foundation (warp) with a wool weft, with floral patterns and the famous Khesti motif which divides the carpet into individual squares, each containing animals, plants, or other symbolic elements. This style has since become popular in rugs throughout the Middle East and even as far as India and China, as have their vibrant use of white, red, brown, green, and yellow shades while traditionally eschewing blue tones.
