Paul Thumann (1834–1908) was a German painter, illustrator, and art professor best known for his refined book illustrations and allegorical, historical, and mythological paintings. Born in Groß Schacksdorf, Prussia, he studied at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin and later under Ferdinand Pauwels in Weimar, where he became a professor in 1866. Thumann taught at the Berlin Academy of Arts and gained wide recognition for illustrations accompanying works by authors such as Goethe, Heine, Chamisso, and Tennyson. His elegant draftsmanship and idealized figures made him one of Germany’s most admired illustrators of the late nineteenth century. In addition to his literary illustrations, he produced religious and historical paintings, and his work Psyche at Nature’s Mirror became especially well known after being used in advertising by White Rock mineral water.
