Paul R. Evans II (1931-1987, known professionally as Paul Evans) was an American furniture designer and artist known for his sculptural, hand-finished furniture that helped pioneer the studio craft movement. Born in Trenton, Pennsylvania, he studied metalwork at the prestigious School for American Craftsmen and Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he gained a reputation for his innovations in Brutalism. Evans’s career was marked by a decade-long collaboration with fellow designer Phillip Lloyd Powell in New Hope, Pennsylvania, and his work was first publicly exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in 1957. A pivotal moment came in 1964 when he became the designer for Directional, a furniture manufacturing company, creating the popular “Argente” series, and in the 1970s he opened a factory-studio with his wife, Louise Weiler, which employed up to 80 artists and operated as an artistic cooperative. Evans’s work was largely unappreciated during his lifetime due to his mercurial nature and problems with alcohol, and he died at the age of 55 from his third heart attack. Since the 21st Century, however, his pieces have experienced a dramatic resurgence in popularity and value, with many of his works becoming highly sought after by collectors.
