Patrick Shia Crabb (born 1947 in Shanghai, China) is an American ceramic sculptor and educator celebrated for his distinctive “deconstruction” shard vessels, large wall platters and figurative sculptures that merge ancient form and contemporary expression. After immigrating to the United States and completing a BFA at the University of Massachusetts and an MFA at the University of California, Santa Barbara, he spent decades as a professor of ceramics—notably at Santa Ana College—and taught at several universities while developing his unique approach to hand-built, thrown and mold-formed ceramics. Crabb’s work is characterized by vessels assembled from individually fired shards—often glazed or treated with raku, sawdust, salt, or oxidation techniques—creating vibrant, multi-textured surfaces that reference historical artifacts and multicultural imagery drawn from his global travels; his pieces are held in numerous public and international collections and have earned awards including a Fulbright Grant from the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council of New Zealand.
