Patrick Nagel (1945–1984) was an iconic American artist whose sleek, high-contrast illustrations of women became a defining visual signature of 1980s pop culture. Born in Dayton, Ohio, and raised in Southern California, he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War before earning a BFA from California State University, Fullerton, and studying at the Chouinard Art Institute. Nagel began his career in graphic design and freelance illustration, creating work for clients such as ABC, MGM, IBM, and Architectural Digest. He gained widespread fame for his contributions to Playboy, producing nearly 285 illustrations between 1975 and 1984, and for designing the iconic album cover for Duran Duran’s Rio. His minimalist, Art Deco–influenced style—marked by bold lines, flat colors, and ethereal, porcelain-skinned women known as the “Nagel Woman”—remains instantly recognizable.
