Patrick Nagel (1945–1984) was an American painter and illustrator celebrated for his sleek, stylized portraits of fashionable women that became defining images of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Born in Dayton, Ohio, he studied at the Chouinard Art Institute and later at California State University, Fullerton before building a successful career as a commercial illustrator. His work appeared regularly in Playboy magazine and in advertising campaigns for major brands, characterized by clean lines, flat areas of color, and striking contrasts. Nagel's popularity reached a wider audience when his artwork inspired the cover of Rio (1982) by the band Duran Duran. Although he died unexpectedly in 1984 at the age of 38, his distinctive style remains an enduring symbol of 1980s popular culture and contemporary illustration.
