Pat Custer Denison (born 1948) has been making art professionally since graduating from the University of Michigan in 1970 with a degree in painting and printmaking. Pat began selling acrylic paintings, woodblock prints, and etchings at outdoor art fairs, but by the late 70s her ceramic tile work took over. She became well known outside of Michigan first for her ceramic tile series, and then larger, whimsical tile wall sculptures that incorporated multiple types of media. In 1990 her husband Chip began running her art studio as Pat’s time became more and more taken up with sculpting, and eventually she shifted focus into watercolors when they moved to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in 1998. Since the 2010s her primary output has been printmaking, with her earlier works still highly sought by collectors.
