Pair of Barbedienne Brass Medallion Tazzas. Within the bowl is a neoclassical figural relief one of which is brass and the other in silver.
The silver inlaid image is of the Goddess Persophone. Daughter of Zues & Demeter, God of the Grain / seed. Married to Hades and Queen of the Underworld. Commonly found on coins of the time as a means of purchasing grain. This beautiful tazza has twin leaf shaped handles with detailed designs.
The all brass Tazza labeled JVNON which is believed to refer to Juno. Goddess of the Heavens and Birth. It has the word Barbedienne written beneath one of the twin handles.
Ferdinand Barbedienne, the son of a small farmer from Calvados, he started his career as a dealer in wallpaper in Paris. In 1838 he went into partnership with Achille Collas (1795-1859), who had just invented a machine to create miniature bronze replicas of statues. Together they started a business selling miniatures of antique statues from museums all over Europe, thus democratising art and making it more accessible to households.
