The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus (Latin: Cor Jesu Sacratissimum) is one of the most well-known Catholic devotions, wherein the heart of Jesus Christ is viewed as a symbol of "God's boundless and passionate love for mankind." Artwork of this traditionally depicts Christ wearing a red tunic, which symbolises the color of blood, martyrdom and humanity. The version created by Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787) represented Jesus with long hair and a short beard, holding in his left hand a flaming heart with a crown of thorns and a cross at the top. Batoni's 1767 piece became popular with the Papacy as the official image for the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with countless variations by other artists appearing through the centuries since, including this one.
