Oeuvres de P.J. Bernard, 1797. This beautiful book is titled “Oeuvres De P. J. Bernard”, and the full title page reads “Oeuvres de P. J. Bernard, Ornees de Gravures D’Apres Les Desseins de Prud’hon; La Dernière Estampe Gravee Par Lui-Meme. A Paris, De L’imprimerie de P. Didot L’Aine, M.DCC.XCVII. An V”, which translates to “The Works of P. J. Bernard, Decorated with Engravings after the Designs of Prud’hon; the Last Print Engraved by Himself, In Paris, From the Printing Press of P. Didot L’Aine, 1797”. The book is in French and a first edition, according to WorldCat, with five raised bands, six compartments with gilt lettering and elaborate gilt tooling on the spine, and “Paris 1797” in gilt on the heel, triple gilt-fillet borders with crimson pebbled boards, marbled endpapers with wide gilt dentelles, followed by seven blank leaves, then the half-title, a blank leaf and the full title page, another blank leaf and then an eight page bibliography about the life of Bernard (“Notice Sur La Vie De Bernard”), and the text, which is 198 pages long. All the edges are gilt, and the book comes in a red slipcase. The book is divided into several parts, with different chapters in each part, and poetry for each chapter. There are five engravings in the book, all full-paged and beautifully done, and the pages are thick and on bright paper, double spaced, and with wide margins. There are 150 copies that are limited and numbered, but have no titles with the engravings. This copy has titles with the engravings, and the engravings are exquisite. The book is 4to. and measures 12 1/4 x 9 3/4 in. wide, it is very attractive and in great condition. The binding is tight, with clean pages and text, clean engravings, and light offset from the engravings on a few pages, with occasional light brown spots in the margins and they don’t touch the text at all. (You hardly notice the brown spots because the margins are so wide.) There’s a ribbon mark on page 69 and a tear on page 93, a light chip at the tip of 183, a slight corner crease at 197, and light rubbing on the crown and heel of the spine, light rubbing at the tips, and three tips are turned in. The slipcase is in very good condition, too, and one critic listed this book as one of the 100 outstanding French illustrated books. #5449
