Louise Bourgeois: Album 1994. This is a book titled “Louise Bourgeois: Album”, with family photos by the sculptor Louise Bourgeois. It is one of 850 copies that were published by Peter Blum in 1994, and we believe it is a first edition. (It is hard to tell because it is in the original shrink wrap, but that is what it seems to be, from all the information we can gather.) The book is bound in beige cloth, with brass screws for the binding. There should be 123 black and white photos inside, with captions printed on half-page glassine that overlaps the photos, and the theme of the book seems to be family. Louise Bourgeois (1911 - 2010) was a French-born American transplant, best known for her large-scale sculpture and installation art, which can occupy an entire room or space that a spectator has to walk through. She was also a prolific painter and a printmaker, and she explored a variety of themes over her lifetime. These included family, sexuality, and the body, as well as death and the unconscious. She believed these themes connected to events from her childhood, and she considered her art therapeutic. She exhibited with Abstract Expressionists, and her work has much in common with Surrealism and feminist art, but she was not formally affiliated with a particular artistic movement.
