Italian-born Guccio Gucci (1881-1953) began his career in London at the Savoy Hotel, learning the tastes and travel habits of wealthy clients, and after World War I returned to Florence to open a shop selling imported luggage and leather goods. Scarcity of leather following Italy’s 1935 trade embargo led him to experiment with alternative materials like raffia, wicker, linen, and jute, develop the iconic rombi motif, and create the “cuoio grasso” tanning technique. His family, including his son Aldo, joined the business, with Aldo opening a Rome shop in 1938 and expanding into gloves, belts, wallets, and keychains. After World War II, Gucci shares were distributed among his sons, and Aldo grew the brand internationally with stores in New York, Paris, London, and Hollywood, eventually extending into clothing, watches, perfumes, and luxury car trims. Family disputes in the 1980s culminated in the Gucci family’s ousting by 1993 and the murder of Aldo’s nephew Maurizio, and today Gucci operates over 500 stores worldwide.
