Morton Lloyd Garchik was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1929. He attended the Art School of the Brooklyn Museum in 1948, but had to take two years off for military service starting 1950. He enrolled in the School of Visual Arts when he returned to New York, where he won first prize in Drawing in 1955 and second prize in Illustration in 1956. He became a prominent post-War printmaker, illustrator, and woodcut artist, best known for his scratchy, folksy images with an expressive, humorous style. He had exhibitions of his work throughout the United States, including solo shows in Chicago and Honolulu and as part of the 38th Northwest Printmakers International in Seattle. He won the 1965 Olivet College Print Collection Purchase Award, and went on to illustrate dozens of novels and children’s books. He also wrote two books on art instruction, Art Fundamentals in 1979 and Creative Visual Thinking in 1981. Most of his works were published by the Associated American Artists up into the 1980s, when he retired. He passed away in a retirement home in Chelsea, Massachusetts in 2009.
