Jorge Dumas was born on February 28th, 1928 in Montevideo, Uruguay. When he was sixteen he began studying painting and drawing at Taller Torres Garcia, an arts education organization which had been founded one year prior. At only 18 years old he had his first two-man show alongside Hungarian sculptor Anthony Khun in São Paulo, Brazil. From about 1947 to 1959 Dumas traveled all around South America, working as a set designer for local theaters and as an illustrator, spending at least two years as a teacher of painting and drawing at the Fine Arts Academy in Salta, Argentina. In 1960 he traveled to the United States for the first time to collaborate with Carlos Paez on a mural for the Pan American Union Building in Washington, D.C., and had first United States exhibition at Georgetown University that same year. He returned to South America in 1961 to accept first prize from the National Salon of Buenos Aires, and spent the next decade based in Montevideo, increasingly building connections in the United States and traveling back and forth frequently to sell his work and establish exhibitions. From 1972 to 1974 he lived in Florence, Italy, traveling all around Europe to glean new inspiration, and in 1975 he settled in New York to work for Circle Fine Arts, opening his own print shop a few years later. He printed for the likes of Peter Max, Romare Bearden, Salvador Dali, Erte, Karl Appel, Corneille, Victor Vasarely, and many more. Dumas was a prolific creator who painted his own stylized figures and made prints in a variety of media. The figurative subjects evolved distinctively wide facial features, and were often engaged in traditional, everyday activities, usually with pensive, unsmiling expressions. He held exhibitions in New York, Chicago, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro, and Maracaibo, Venezuela over the next few years, with his work acquired for permanent display at the Caracas Museum of Contemporary Arts and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Jorge Dumas moved to Madison, Connecticut after a doctor recommended he get fresh air away from cities in 1984, and he passed away there the following year on April 4th.
