Mid Century Modern Ritts Furniture Hollywood Regency Astrolite Lucite Table Lighter. A stunning example of the Los Angeles, California-based company's aesthetic. The metal lighter mechanism is marked "Japan."

Condition: Great.

Size: 2 1/4 x 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 in.

Prior to World War II furniture designer Herb Ritts emigrated to America from Europe, opening the Ritts Furniture Company in the mid-1930s in Los Angeles, California. He married Shirley Roos in 1950 while she was traveling along the West Coast, and the two became a power couple in the interior design market shortly thereafter, with Herb focused on furniture design and Shirley on sales and marketing. The company was instrumental in popularizing rattan during the 1950 and 60s, particularly after designing Polynesian themed furniture and sets for the 1961 Elvis Presley film Blue Hawaii. One of their most recognizable designs was Astrolite, a trademarked lucite that formed the bulk of their higher-end furniture, and they have also been credited with bringing the California style, especially the concept of a sunroom, to homes across the United States. As none of their children continued in the family business, it was dissolved upon Shirley’s death in 2008, but their iconic pieces are still sought after by collectors as indispensable emblems of mid-Century Americana.

Great.
