Michele Des Verney Redwine was born in Harlem, New York in 1943, the daughter of a businessman and teacher who insisted that she explore the arts and music from an early age. Overcoming the racial prejudice against African Americans that prevailed at that time, she was drawn to sculpture, but eventually focused on arts and educational administration after graduating from Boston University in the late 1960s, working with colleges and municipalities around the country to improve diversity and traveling frequently with her husband Preston, an executive with I.B.M. In 2005 they relocated to Sarasota, Florida after his retirement, where she returned to her first love making pottery, sculptures, and jewelry, but continued to utilize her unique skillset by starting the Gulf Coast Community Choir and founding the Suncoast Black Art Collaborative, as well as joining the boards of arts organizations throughout the region including Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, the Hermitage Artist Retreat, and the Ringling Museum.
