Michael L. Coleman was born in Livingston, Montana in 1941. Best known for his serene, unpeopled oil and gouache paintings of the American West, he was drawn to art and began creating landscapes at a young age but found the academic world more focused on non-objective subjects. He obtained a degree in accounting and then spent two years with the Army before returning to the United States to work for a public accounting firm for nearly a decade in Denver, Colorado. Still painting in his spare time, he eventually gave up accounting to focus on being a professional artist, returning to Montana in 1976 before settling permanently in Bremerton, Washington in 1982. Signing his works “M.L. Coleman” to minimize confusion with fellow landscape painter Michael Coleman in Utah, he began traveling the globe for further inspiration in the 1990s, producing Impressionistic cityscapes and street scenes as well as sweeping countryside vistas. His works are found in private and corporate collections all around the world.
