Mary White (1926–2013) was a celebrated Welsh ceramicist and calligrapher renowned for her elegantly crafted porcelain works. Born in Croesyceiliog, Wales, she studied art and design at Goldsmiths’ College before initially teaching and then dedicating herself fully to ceramics in the 1970s. White pioneered a signature style featuring wide-flanged bowls and delicate, paper-thin rims—designs inspired by coastal landscapes and natural forms. In the 1980s, after moving to Germany, she deepened her artistry with organic, hand-built porcelain pieces, often integrating calligraphic lettering in lustre. A fellow of the Society of Scribes & Illuminators since 1962, she received the Rheinland-Pfalz State Prize in 1982. Her work, distinguished by translucent textures, sculptural forms, and the interplay of text and vessel, is held in museum collections across Europe, including the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
