Mary Adrienne Dumas was born in Wisconsin on January 31st, 1912. Fleeing the Midwest and the poverty of the Great Depression, she moved to Berkeley, California in 1933, where she took courses at the University of California. Graduating in 1937 with a degree in textiles, she made many pilgrimages to the American Southwest, fascinated by the native artwork and absorbing multiple techniques. She became a Professor of Design at the University in 1951, with a special focus on a variety of textiles, particularly batik, fold-and-dye, and tritik techniques. She was an outspoken champion of folk art techniques and a firm critic of contemporary mass produced art, inspiring generations of students with her work in a permanent exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum and in the University of California at Riverside Commons. A lifelong spinster, she died suddenly at her home in Berkeley on May 11th, 1971.
