Mario Badioli, 20th Century Large Murano Glass Vase. Applied melted sections and ribbons with abstract face. Last quarter of the 20th Century.

Size: 4 x 9 1/2 x 19 in.

Born in Murano in 1940. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to master glass blower Ermanno Nason, at the firm Mazzega I.V.M. From 1958 to 1960 he attended the Institute of Fine Arts in Venice, where he studied under Professor Angelo Fuga. In the same period started working, still with the same firm, Mazzega I.V.M., as a junior master. His first experience as a Maestro came in 1968 when he began working for Fratelli Pitau. He remained there for 10 years working on many different types of productions. From 1979 until late 1983 he worked for the firm Oball. His favorite artist was Picasso, but he was never able to meet him. After 1984, in his own glassworks-studio, he was finally able to work freely, and began working on glass sculptures. Mario Badioli currently lives and works in Murano, Italy. A fourth generation glass artist, Mario conceives and realizes his sculptures in a small studio, where his daughter assists him. Like her father did with his father, she is working at her father’s side to continue the fine art form of glass work in the “Badioli style”. Unique in his approach, Mario’s figures are somewhat “cubist”. His inspiration for his sculptures are the colors and forms of the twentieth century art. Various French painters such as Picasso, Magritte and Klee have influenced his work. Mario has perfected a particular method of applying color by “slapping” and “dripping” hot colored glass over clear. In this way, he “paints” his pieces, each one unique. This technique enables him to express himself in a more “painterly” way and to achieve individuality. Mario’s glass is purposely imprecise; he prefers rough over the smooth, texture over the slick surfaces, mottled color over the precision. This seemingly casual hand is, in fact, the allure of his style. Mario is a master among the glass sculptors of Italy. Some of the finest glass in the world emerges from the small studios of Murano. The unique and intricate works of Mario are certainly amongst the finest in his field. Contemporary and electric, Mario leads the field with his works.
