Mariana Cotten was an American painter known for her whimsical, acrylic scenes where flowers bloom, children walk dogs, and the Good Humor man is never far away, inviting viewers to reconnect with the childlike wonder in everyday life. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, to a Russian father and American mother, her childhood and later experiences studying and working in Connecticut, Virginia, New York, London, and Miami—including being the first female keeper at Crandon Park Zoo—provided rich inspiration for her art. After marrying in 1972, she and her husband moved to South Caicos in the British West Indies, where she began decorating hotel walls with colorful murals, gradually developing the primitive, playful style for which she became known. Drawing heavily on the perspectives of her husband and young daughter, Cotten sought to create joyful, uncomplicated art that delights children and offers a brief escape from the pressures of modern life.
