Louis Icart (1888-1950), full name Louis Justin Laurent Icart, was a French painter, illustrator, and printmaker famous for his glamorous, often erotic Art Deco depictions of women, Parisian social life, and fashion. Born in Toulouse, he moved to Paris in 1907 where he produced etchings, aquatints, and drypoints, as well as illustrations and paintings. His muse and wife, Fanny Volmers, appeared frequently in his work, and during the 1920s and 1930s he achieved considerable fame in both Europe and the United States for his sensual, stylized figures and romantic scenes. Icart also endured World War I as a pilot, and during World War II created works documenting French suffering, such as the “L’Exode” series; after his death in Paris in 1950, his prints and paintings continued to attract collectors for their elegance, wit, and distinct decorative beauty.
