The Story of Little Black Sambo is a children’s tale written and illustrated by Helen Bannerman, first published in 1899. Set in a vividly imagined, tropical environment inspired by India, the story follows a clever young boy named Sambo who outwits a group of tigers by giving up his colorful new clothes one by one; the tigers, vainly comparing their finery, end up chasing each other in circles until they melt into butter. Sambo later recovers his belongings, and the melted butter is used by his family to make pancakes, providing a whimsical and satisfying conclusion. The book is noted for its simple narrative structure, repetitive storytelling style, and imaginative, almost fable-like tone that appealed to young readers of its time.
