This book is titled Anatomy, Descriptive And Surgical, by Henry Gray, it is the Second American Edition published in Philadelphia in 1862 by Blanchard and Lea, from the Revised and Enlarged London edition, with Three Hundred and Ninety-Five Engravings on wood, and the dissection drawings were done jointly  by the author and Dr. H. V. Carter, M. D.
Henry Gray was a lecturer on anatomy at Saint George’s Hospital Medical School and Dr. Carter demonstrated anatomy at St. George’s Hospital in London, so it was natural for them to collaborate on the drawings.
The book measures 10 1/4 x 7 inches wide, with a tight binding and clean pages and text. The owner’s name (“A Hardie”) is inscribed on the front paste-down, there are 786 pages text and an Index that begins on page 787 and ends on page 816, all the text and illustrations are present, and the only blemishes we could find are a light scratch on the front cover and the lettering on the spine is faded a bit.
The first American edition from 1859 was published just prior to the American Civil War, and it was an important guide for doctors who performed surgery on the battlefield for wounded soldiers on both sides of the conflict.
The first American edition from 1859 goes for $19,000 on the rare book website we use, it was only 754 pages long with an 80-page index and 363 engravings,  a rebound copy from 1859 goes for $3000, an ex-library copy from 1859 goes for $2750 on the same website, with wear, stains, and loss, the second American edition from 1862 goes for $3982, a modern facsimile goes for $95 and a modern clamshell case for the book goes for $250 without the book, and we are starting the bidding low to get the bidding going for this rare American Civil War medical book.
