Born in the Pacsila Valley in 1935, Gumertildo Leoncio Sáenz (widely known as the “Father of Nicaraguan Drawing”) discovered his artistic calling in childhood and earned a scholarship to the School of Fine Arts of Nicaragua at age seventeen. Moving to Managua in 1954, he evolved from a primitivist painter to an internationally acclaimed master who integrated pre-Columbian motifs, indigenous myths, and post-cubist styles to highlight his nation’s mestizo heritage. In 1960 Sáenz co-founded the influential “Praxis” art movement, going on to represent Nicaragua at major international exhibitions and establishing several national artist associations. He became particularly celebrated for his massive public murals throughout the capital, most notably his iconic 30-meter depiction of an indigenous market in Plaza de España. Over his extensive career, he directed the National School of Fine Arts, illustrated cultural works, and received prestigious honors including the Order of Rubén Darío. Sáenz passed away in 2008 in Matagalpa, leaving behind an enduring legacy as one of Nicaragua’s most original visual artists and cultural preservers.
