Hosteen Etsitty is a Navajo (Diné) artist and master sandpainter associated with Shiprock, New Mexico, on the Navajo Reservation. He learned the traditional art of sandpainting at age 17 from elders in the spiritual community and went on to become known for intricate ceremonial-style works using natural pigments to depict Navajo deities, animals, plants, and celestial beings. His paintings draw on an art form traditionally connected with Navajo healing ceremonies and the restoration of harmony, while his work has also circulated widely in the contemporary art market and cultural institutions.
