Leo Herrmann (1853–1927) was a French painter best known for his finely detailed genre scenes depicting Roman Catholic cardinals and clergy in humorous, often lighthearted situations. Born in Paris and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts, he exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1875 onward and developed a successful career within the academic tradition. His paintings combined meticulous realism with gentle satire, showing cardinals engaged in everyday pleasures such as socializing, painting, feeding birds, or enjoying food and wine. Although overshadowed by the rise of modernist movements in the early twentieth century, Herrmann’s work remains appreciated for its technical skill, wit, and vivid portrayal of clerical life.
