Arthur Upelnieks was a Latvian-born American painter best known for his atmospheric seascapes, coastal landscapes, and maritime scenes. Born in Riga in 1911, he developed a naturalistic style characterized by dramatic depictions of fishing boats, stormy seas, rocky shorelines, and the changing moods of the ocean. Following exhibitions in Europe—including a series of solo shows in Germany after World War II—he later settled in the United States, where he continued painting throughout his career. His works, typically executed in oil on canvas, are noted for their strong sense of movement, light, and weather, reflecting a deep connection to the sea and coastal life. Today, Upelnieks’ paintings appear regularly at auction and are collected for their evocative maritime imagery and traditional representational technique.
