Kurt Vonnegut (1922-2007) was a renowned American author celebrated for his unique blend of satirical, humanist, and science fiction literature. Born in Indianapolis, his life and writing were profoundly shaped by his experience as a World War II prisoner of war in Dresden, Germany. He published 14 novels, including the influential Slaughterhouse-Five which resonated with the anti-war sentiment of the country during the Vietnam Era, and most of his stories explored themes of conflict, free will, and the human condition through his own unique lens of science fiction, historical commentary, fantasy, and magic realism. After early careers in journalism and public relations, he gained fame for his dark humor and distinct, conversational writing style. When Vonnegut passed away in 2007 he left behind a lasting legacy as one of the 20th Century’s most iconic writers, with collections, plays, and non-fiction works published both before and after his death.
