Kiyoshi Saitō was born on April 27th, 1907 in Aizubange, Fukushima, and became one of the most influential sōsaku-hanga artists in 20th Century Japan. In 1938 he issued his first prints, the "Winter in Aizu" series, with most of his early works depicting Japanese villages in a high degree of realism. After World War II he traveled to Paris, where he was inspired and influenced by Western artists including Paul Gauguin, Henry Matisse, and Pablo Picasso. Saitō was one of the first Japanese printmaking artists to have won awards at the São Paulo Biennale in 1951, and his later works merged modern Western ideas and styles with Japanese tradition, moving into abstraction with architectural and plant motifs. Saito’s works have influenced a variety of art and film such as “Kubo and the Two Strings,” and since his death on November 14th, 1997 his works have been increasingly sought for their multicultural approach to classic woodblock techniques.
