Albert Ernest Newbury (1891-1941) was an Australian painter celebrated for his tonal landscapes and serene pastoral scenes. Born in Melbourne, he studied at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School, where he developed a style marked by simplicity, spacious composition, and subtle modulation of light and shadow. Active primarily during the 1920s and 1930s, Newbury produced a body of work that included landscapes, occasional portraits, and still lifes, reflecting both the Australian environment and a contemplative, almost meditative approach to form and color. Though less widely known internationally, his work was respected in Australian art circles and continues to be collected and exhibited, highlighting his contribution to early 20th‑century Australian painting.
