Born in Melbourne, he studied at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School, where he developed a style marked by simplicity, spacious composition, and subtle modulation of light and shadow. Active primarily during the 1920s and 1930s, Newbury produced a body of work that included landscapes, occasional portraits, and still lifes, reflecting both the Australian environment and a contemplative, almost meditative approach to form and color.
