**Keith Haring** (1958 – 1990) was an influential American artist and social activist whose bold, graphic style and iconic imagery helped define 1980s street culture and contemporary art. Born in **Reading, Pennsylvania**, he moved to **New York City** in 1978 to study at the School of Visual Arts, where he emerged from the subway graffiti scene with energetic chalk drawings on empty metro advertising panels that quickly gained public attention. Haring’s work—characterized by radiant babies, barking dogs, and rhythmic figures outlined in thick black lines—blended pop art’s accessibility with powerful social messages addressing **AIDS awareness, apartheid, drug addiction, and LGBTQ+ rights**; he also collaborated with musicians, fashion designers and community organizations. Before his death from AIDS-related complications at age 31, Haring exhibited internationally, opened the **Pop Shop** to make his art widely available, and left a lasting legacy as a passionate communicator whose joyful yet urgent visual language continues to resonate globally.
