Keith Haring (1958–1990) was an American artist and activist whose bold, graphic style became emblematic of 1980s street culture and the downtown New York art scene. Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, and trained at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, Haring first gained attention through his spontaneous chalk drawings in subway stations—featuring radiant babies, barking dogs, and dancing figures rendered in thick black lines. Deeply influenced by graffiti, pop art, and social activism, Haring used his art to address urgent issues such as AIDS awareness, apartheid, drug addiction, and LGBTQ+ rights. His work extended from public murals and gallery shows to collaborations with musicians, fashion designers, and children’s programs, often maintaining accessibility and joy alongside serious political commentary. Haring died of AIDS-related complications at age 31, but his legacy continues through the Keith Haring Foundation, which supports arts education and HIV/AIDS advocacy.
