Angel Botello Dos Chicas con Munecas (ca. 1975).
Ángel Botello (1913–1986) was a Spanish-born artist who became a prominent figure in Caribbean and Puerto Rican modern art. Born in Cangas de Morrazo, Galicia, Spain, he later studied in Bordeaux, France, at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he trained in drawing, painting, and sculpture. He continued his education at the Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, but his studies were interrupted by the Spanish Civil War, during which he served as a cartographer. After the war, he fled to France and eventually settled in the Dominican Republic, then Haiti, where he began to develop the vibrant, figurative style that would define his career. In 1953, Botello moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he established Galería Botello and immersed himself in the local art scene. His work, often referred to as “Botellian,” is characterized by bold color, simplified forms, and deeply personal subjects, frequently depicting his family and Caribbean life. Botello worked across multiple media, including painting, printmaking, sculpture, and mosaics. Nicknamed the “Caribbean Gauguin,” he brought a distinctive voice to modern art in the region. Even after being diagnosed with cancer in the 1980s, he continued to produce major bronze sculptures until his death in 1986. Today, his legacy is preserved through his widely collected artworks and his former home in Old San Juan, now a gallery dedicated to his life and work.
