Käthe Kollwitz (1867 – 1945) was a seminal German artist and printmaker whose powerful engravings, etchings, lithographs and woodcuts poignantly explored themes of poverty, war, grief and social injustice with deep emotional force and humane compassion. Born in Königsberg, she studied art in Berlin amid the rise of social movements and was profoundly influenced by personal tragedy, including the death of her son in World War I, which intensified her focus on the suffering of the working class and the costs of conflict. Kollwitz’s stark, expressive imagery—marked by vigorous line, somber tones and empathetic portrayals of mothers, workers and the bereaved—made her one of the most resonant voices of 20th-century graphic art, and she became the first woman elected to the Prussian Academy of Arts; her work continues to be celebrated internationally for its moral urgency and enduring humanity.
