Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was a French painter, sculptor, and draftsman and one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, best known as a leader of Fauvism, a movement defined by bold color, expressive line, and emotional intensity rather than naturalistic representation. Born in northern France, he initially studied law before turning to art in his early twenties, training at the Académie Julian and later under Gustave Moreau, who encouraged his individuality. Matisse’s work evolved from early experiments with color and form into a highly refined visual language characterized by flattened space, decorative pattern, and lyrical simplicity, evident in iconic paintings such as Woman with a Hat, The Dance, and The Red Studio. In his later years, limited by illness, he developed his celebrated cut-paper “gouaches découpées”, including The Blue Nudes and the monumental designs for the Chapelle du Rosaire in Vence, which he considered his masterpiece. His radical approach to color and composition profoundly shaped modern art and continues to influence artists worldwide.
