This is an abstract watercolor by Julio de Diego, a Spanish artist who was far from the mainstream of modern art. He was born in Madrid and wanted to be an artist even in his teens, but his father objected and destroyed all his drawings, so Julio left home for good at fifteen. He worked in a Madrid studio that produced scenery for operas and appeared as an extra in a ballet production starring the great Najinsky. He enlisted in the Spanish cavalry to fight in the Rif Wars against the Berbers in Morocco, then emigrated to Chicago, where he designed magazine covers, did fashion illustrations, and decorated the interiors of a church. During the Depression, he painted street scenes, landscapes, and murals for the WPA. In 1946 he married Gypsy Rose Lee, settled in California, and eventually moved to Sarasota, Florida, where he died in 1979. He was known as a visual artist, and you can see that in the watercolor here. There are three couples wearing colorful costumes, they appear to be exaggerated mod figures, and they all have a Spanish flair. The title is "To have plenty is to be confused” and it seems like de Diego is poking fun at people through sexual imagery. The watercolor is signed in the image in the lower right, and the overall size is 8 1/2 x 11 3/8 in. wide.
