Julian Ritter (1909–2000) was a German-born American painter celebrated for his evocative depictions of clowns, nudes, and portraits. After immigrating to the U.S. in 1924, he studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the Art Center School in Los Angeles. Ritter's clown paintings, initiated in the late 1940s, are noted for their expressive portrayal of human emotions, often reflecting introspection and compassion. He once remarked, "In the clown one sees all the emotions a man can express; to record him is to depict humanity itself." His works gained popularity in venues like Las Vegas's Silver Slipper Casino, which housed many of his pieces. Later in life, Ritter's art evolved to encompass mystical and spiritual themes, influenced by personal experiences, including a harrowing 90-day ordeal adrift at sea. Throughout his career, Ritter remained committed to exploring the depths of human emotion through his art.
