Joseph Hirsch (1910–1981) was an American painter, illustrator, muralist, and teacher, renowned for his socially conscious artworks that often addressed themes of civic corruption and racial injustice. Born in Philadelphia, he began his formal art education at the age of 17 at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art, now known as the University of the Arts. He further honed his skills under the tutelage of George Luks in New York and Henry Hensche in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Hirsch's artistic journey led him to travel extensively, including a significant stay in France, and he was a participant in the Works Progress Administration's easel painting division. His works are held in esteemed collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. In addition to his artistic endeavors, Hirsch was a dedicated educator, teaching at various institutions and influencing generations of artists.
