Jose Royo was born in 1941 in Valencia, Spain and studied art at San Carlos Academy, as well as in museums throughout and around the nearby Catalan region, where he was exposed to the work of many European Masters. By the time he was 18 he was already receiving commissions for portraits from local merchants, and began to concentrate on larger scale works as well as landscapes in his early 20s. In the mid 1960s through the early 1970s he worked on designs for local theaters, as well as illustration for a regional magazine and aiding in restoration efforts for murals and frescoes that had been damaged in World War II, and in 1968 he began to exhibit in Spain, specifically Lisbon, Madrid, and Barcelona. With positive reception of his works in Madrid, Royo received commissions to paint the royal portraits of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia as well as prominent political and society figures, and today his work can be found in permanent collections around Europe.
