John Stobart (1929–2023) was a British-born maritime artist celebrated for his meticulously researched paintings of historic seaports and sailing ships, particularly those of 18th- and 19th-century North America. Born in Leicester, England, he developed an early fascination with ships and the sea, studying at Derby College of Art before beginning a career in marine illustration. After moving to the United States in the 1960s, Stobart became widely known for large, atmospheric harbor scenes depicting cities such as Boston, New York, Salem, and Baltimore during their golden age of sail. His works combined artistic skill with historical accuracy, often reconstructed from archival research, and were exhibited in major museums and maritime institutions. Through his paintings, books, and lectures, Stobart played a significant role in popularizing maritime history and preserving the visual memory of historic port cities.
