John Konstantin Hansegger (1908–1989) was a Swiss-American painter and printmaker whose career spanned seven decades and bridged European modernism with mid-20th-century American art. Born in St. Gallen, Switzerland, he was active in the avant-garde circles of 1930s Paris and was associated with the Swiss modernist group Allianz before founding the Des Eaux Vives Gallery in Zurich during World War II, a space that supported abstract and concrete art. After relocating to the United States, Hansegger produced a wide range of work—from expressive portraits to abstract compositions—and developed a personal style he called “Abstract Parallelism,” which combined rhythmic, striped backgrounds with floating figurative or geometric motifs. Though not widely known today, his technically skilled, stylistically diverse body of work continues to interest collectors and art historians.
