Frank Bernard Nuderscher (1880-1959) was an American Impressionist painter, illustrator, and muralist often called the “dean of St. Louis artists” for his significant contributions to the Missouri art community. Though largely self-taught, he refined his skills through classes and travel to New York, Philadelphia, and Provincetown, gaining early recognition for his painting of the Eads Bridge before exploring Europe and becoming a highly sought after illustrator of commercial advertisements, architectural drawings, book illustrations, and magazine covers. In the 1930s he was the area supervisor for the WPA Federal Arts Project, and was the founder and director of the Nuderscher School of Art in St. Louis, the Ozark School of Art in Arcadia, and ran a summer school in Kimmswick, training multiple generations of Midwest artists. His paintings are in the collections of the Saint Louis Art Museum, the National Park Service Museum of Westward Expansion, and the Arkansas Arts Center, among others, and his numerous murals are still appreciated by visitors at banks, museums, schools, and private mansions where he left his mark.
