John Joseph Enneking (1841-1916) was a leading New England landscape painter of the late 19th century, best known for his Tonalist twilight forest scenes though he also drew from the Hudson River School and Impressionism. Born in Ohio, he moved to Boston after the Civil War, studying with Samuel Gerry before traveling to Europe for four years, where he was influenced by Barbizon painters and Impressionists like Monet and Pissarro. Returning to Boston, he established himself as a prominent artist and teacher, exhibiting widely and painting throughout New England, especially the White Mountains and Cape Cod. Celebrated in his lifetime, he was honored in 1915 with a grand testimonial dinner in Boston attended by over a thousand admirers.
