Santa Lucia, also known as Saint Lucy, is a Christian martyr venerated particularly in Italy and Scandinavia, celebrated for her steadfast faith and charitable acts during the early 4th century. According to tradition, she was a young Sicilian woman who devoted her life to God and aided the poor, ultimately being executed during the Diocletian persecution, making her a symbol of courage, purity, and devotion. Her feast day, December 13, is marked by candlelit processions, especially in Sweden and parts of Italy, where girls often wear white robes with red sashes and crowns of candles, commemorating her role as a bringer of light in the dark winter. Artistic representations frequently depict her holding a palm of martyrdom or a dish with her eyes, reflecting the legends of her unwavering faith and miraculous protection.
Lined, extensive crackle and retouch; frame with abrasions.
