John Fulton Folinsbee (1892–1972) was an American landscape painter closely associated with the New Hope School, or Pennsylvania Impressionists, who settled in New Hope, Pennsylvania, in 1916. Born in Buffalo, New York, he began studying art as a child and later trained with artists including Jonas Lie, Birge Harrison, John F. Carlson, and Frank Vincent DuMond. Despite contracting polio as a teenager and using a wheelchair throughout his life, Folinsbee developed a distinguished six-decade career, becoming known for atmospheric landscapes of the Delaware River Valley, particularly winter scenes, canals, factories, and industrial subjects around New Hope and Lambertville. His early work reflected Impressionist concerns with light and plein-air observation, but after studying Cézanne and later artists such as El Greco, Goya, and Maurice de Vlaminck, his painting evolved into a darker, more vigorous and expressive style. He was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1919 and to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1953.
