John Henry Fincher was born on August 4th, 1941 in Hamilton, Texas and showed an early interest in drawing, eventually leaving Texas Tech College in Lubbock to enroll in advertising art and design at the School of Architecture in Austin. There he discovered a love of painting, and obtained his Masters of Fine Arts in Art History and English from the University of Oklahoma before becoming an art professor at Wichita State University in Kansas in 1966. After being heavily inspired by Santa Fe, New Mexico on a trip, he moved there in 1976, and together with his partner John “Jake” Jacobson began to travel the world, seeking more and more inspiration for his canvases. In 1980 he held his first solo exhibition at the Elaine Horwitch Galleries, and a book of his large, Southwest-inspired images was published in 2012. In 2021, unable to stand and paint any longer, he moved to an assisted living facility, where he died on August 15th, 2024, and his landscapes and still lifes are more highly sought by collectors than ever.
