John Deng was born in Shanghai, China in 1964. He graduated from the China Central Fine Arts and Design Institute at Tusinghua University in Beijing in 1987, focused on painting and becoming an art teacher. He taught at the college level for several years before discovering a love of photography, and traveled to America to study at the New York University Tisch School Department of Visual Arts. In 1998 he started his own commercial photography studio in New York City, but found himself experiencing wanderlust and a desire to seek out inspiration all over the world, traveling to new locations at least once a year ever since, including Japan, India, Myanmar, Laos, Nepal, Bhutan, Malaysia, Ethiopia, Cuba, Peru, and Antarctica. His fine art and large-scale photography has been exhibited widely across the United States in various galleries and at competitions and shows in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., and his focus has shifted more and more toward depictions of humans engaged in everyday activities, existing with a Zen-like relationship to their surrounding landscape.
