John Willem Barends was born on April 20th, 1932 in Pare Pare, Indonesia to Dutch parents. In his late teens he studied art at the Leiden Institute in Holland, then traveled to Toronto, Canada to study under Bobbi de Silaghi. In the early 1960s he moved to California, where he was active in both avant garde and more traditional art circles in Palo Alto, Carmel, Santa Cruz, and Seaside, becoming a member of the Santa Cruz Art League. After ten years in California he was invited by an associate to teach at an art studio in Sarasota, Florida, and decided to settle there, opening a framing company and meeting his longtime partner, artist Julee Docking. They both became members of the Florida Artist Group and exhibited their pieces at the Kennedy Center, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Ringling Museum. Towards the end of his life Barends was active in a local Dutch heritage club, and since his passing on June 2nd, 2018 his paintings have increasingly been sought after by private collectors all over the world.
