John Alexander Noble (1913–1983) was an American artist renowned for his detailed depictions of maritime life in New York Harbor. Born in Paris, France, in 1913, he moved to the United States with his family in 1919. His father, John "Wichita Bill" Noble, was also a noted painter. Noble's early exposure to the sea profoundly influenced his artistic career; as a teenager, he worked on schooners and tugboats, experiences that deeply informed his art. He studied at the University of Grenoble in France and later at the National Academy of Design in New York. In 1941, he constructed a floating studio from salvaged ship parts at Port Johnston Coal Docks, a graveyard for wooden sailing vessels. From this unique workspace, Noble produced a vast body of work—including oil paintings, charcoal drawings, sketches, and lithographs—that meticulously documented the vessels and workers of the harbor. His dedication to capturing the essence of maritime life has left an enduring legacy in American art.
